Closer to Nature Safari Experience Tour

About South Luangwa National Park:

For most visitors, South Luangwa National Park is by far the most practical park to visit in the valley. This is Zambia’s premier wildlife park, with superb wildlife and many excellent camps. This is where the now famous walking safaris started from over 60 years ago and this unique African destination retains some of the finest world-class safari guides.

There are many contenders for the title of Africa's best game park. The Serengeti, Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Etosha, Kruger, Moremi and Mana Pools would certainly be high on the list. South Luangwa has a better claim than most. Some of these other areas will match its phenomenally high game densities. Many others – the lesser known of Africa's parks – will have equally few visitors. One or two also allow night drives, which open up a different, nocturnal world to view, allowing leopards to be commonly seen and even watched whilst hunting.

However, few have South Luangwa's high quality of guiding together with its remarkable wildlife spectacles, day and night, in the isolation of a true wilderness. These elements, perhaps, are how the contenders ought to be judged, and on these the South Luangwa Park comes out around the top of the list.

Day 1 -3: Kapamba Bushcamp – South Luangwa National Park

Kapamba Bushcamp

A remote and romantic camp situated in a prime location on the Kapamba River, and one of only two Bushcamps to be open from April to January - the other being Zungulila.

Profile: In a remote corner of the South Luangwa National Park lies Kapamba, a camp that combines the isolation and superb game-viewing opportunities of a true Bushcamp with a touch of... dare we say it... luxury.

Set on the banks of the shallow, spring-fed eponymous river, Kapamba is surrounded by some of the park's richest wildlife. Watching an elephant take a dip in the river can be quite an experience when you're lounging in your own private plunge pool. The central bar and dining room is positioned under a huddle of matumi and sausage trees, with a wide deck that stretches out with views of the Kapamba River. And if that's still not close enough for you, why not enjoy your G&T from the middle of the river itself, your feet dipped in the cool, crystal shallows.

Activities - Get out into the bush and explore the rich diversity of the surrounding area on a morning walking safari, and then later in the day, jump into a Land Rover for an afternoon/evening game drive. On special occasions we can also arrange an afternoon wading through the cool waters of the Kapamba where a scenic sundowner or special meal will be waiting for you.

When the weather is right, you can spend siesta time in the Kapamba River right in front of camp!

Day 3 – 5: Bilimungwe Bush Camp – South Luangwa National Park

Bilimungwe Bushcamp

Warm and welcoming, this beautiful camp blends seamlessly with its surroundings and offers unrivalled wildlife viewings.

It's hard not to be seduced by the charm of Bilimungwe.

Here, the traditions of the African Bushcamp meet elegance and style to create a stunning camp that feels like it has grown organically out of the surrounding landscape. Set beneath a huge mahogany tree, the heart of Bilimungwe is the cool, shady lounge area that looks out over one of the camps three waterholes. Settle down in a cosy armchair with a sundowner and relax as you watch an enviable display of spectacular birds and animals that clearly feel as comfortable here as you do. With the open waters of the Luangwa River also on your doorstep and a nearby plain where leopard prowl, it's clear that this is a nature-lovers paradise, and with Manda Chisanga - Bilimungwe's award-winning resident guide - to lead you, you could not be in better hands. (In the event that Manda is not available, another guide from The Bushcamp Company's excellent and experienced team will be on hand).

Activities: Take advantage of the exceptional knowledge and charm of resident guide Manda Chisanga, and head out with him on a combination of walking safaris, day and night game drives, and sundowners on the river's edge. In between outings, find a chair and enjoy the wildlife magnets that are Bilimungwe’s three permanent waterholes. Who needs satellite television when you have your very own 'Bush TV' to entertain you?

(In the event that Manda is not available, another guide from The Bushcamp Company excellent and experienced team will be on hand).

Day 5 – 8: Chindeni Bushcamp – South Luangwa National Park

Chindeni Bushcamp

A sublime tented camp on the edge of a permanent lagoon with the Chindeni Hills providing a truly breathtaking backdrop.

Profile: In an enviable location on the edge of a lagoon where hippo chortle and elephant wallow, stands Chindeni - undoubtedly one of the most beautiful tented camps in the South Luangwa.

There's something about sleeping under canvas that ignites a sense of adventure in everyone. At Chindeni you can combine that thrill with style and comfort in one of its four opulent tents. Gaze out from your private veranda onto the lagoon which attracts birds and animals from miles around. Or settle back with a gin-and-tonic in the central lounge and dining area - a glorious expanse of varnished decking arranged on several levels around the surrounding ebony trees, boasting, of course, the same spectacular view of the serene lagoon and its inhabitants.

Activities - Whether you are in the mood for intrepid exploration or perhaps some more sedentary wildlife viewing, Chindeni will deliver. Avid game viewers and birdwatchers can set out on superb walking safaris, game drives, night drives and scenic sundowner trips in the surrounding area. Or you can just park yourself in a deckchair at camp and watch the abundance of game that is drawn to the lagoon.

Day 8 – 10: Chamilandu Bushcamp – South Luangwa National Park

Chamilandu Bushcamp

A breathtaking camp on one of the South Luangwa's prime river locations, perfect for a bird's-eye view of the wildlife that the river and its lagoons attract.

Profile: There's nothing quite like waking up at Chamilandu.

Early morning views don't get much better than the rippling waters of the Luangwa River, the gentle rise of the Chindeni Hills and a vast African sky - especially when you're lying in a four-poster bed in a handsome stilted tree-house. You don't even need to leave your bed to see the wildlife - from your unique vantage point you can watch as animals roam across the landscape, or swing through the trees above your head.

There are just three stilted chalets at this exclusive camp, set on the riverbank beneath a soaring ebony grove. Enjoy a sundowner from the comfort of the thatched bar and dining area, as you watch the wildlife do the same at the river.

Exceptional game viewing and understated elegance make Chamilandu a place to remember.

Activities - Walking safaris and game drives around Chamilandu explore the impressive range of habitats in the area. With no fewer than seven oxbow lagoons behind camp, there are always thirsty animals around seeking refreshment. Our hide looks out over one of these lagoons and is the perfect place to take lunch, tea or to while away an afternoon in a hammock to the soundtrack of bathing elephant.
