Brief notes about Kafue National Park

Found in the centre of western Zambia, Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest of Zambia’s national parks. It covers a massive 22,400 km2.

First established as a National Park in the 1950’s by the legendary Norman Carr, Kafue is one of the largest national parks in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location only two hours drive from Livingstone, it remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched. Thanks to its size and variety of habitat types the Kafue holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife.

In recent years the Park has seen a well-managed growth in the number of Safari Camps and Lodges that operate in and around the Park. This new interest has brought with it more visitors and investment to the area, notably in infrastructure with a number of well-graded roads and airstrips.

As a consequence of the increasing interest and benefits in terms of investment this brings, the wildlife is beginning to enjoy an increased level of protection by the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), always aided and supported by the operators in and adjoining the park.

Day 4 to Day 6 - Mukambi Safari Lodge

Spend a night in the wild in our spacious family chalets along the Kafue River or bring your own camping gear. Enjoy a day of fishing or simply relax with an evening boat cruise while watching the beautiful sunset over the Kafue River. Indulge in our delicious meals made with the best ingredients, or cook your catch of freshly caught fish from the Kafue River. Go game viewing in our specialised safari vehicles or take a walking safari to see a vast range of wild animals in the Kafue National Park. Keep powered up at the lodge with solar power and backup generators.

Experience an opportunity to appreciate the great variety of wildlife, with a morning or night drive in our specially customized safari vehicle and knowledgeable guides. Boat safari or walking safari facilities are also available.

Brief notes about Lower Zambezi National Park

This Park is still relatively undeveloped, it’s beauty lying in it’s wilderness state. The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are spectacular. The Park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the Zambezi River is a massive wildlife sanctuary.

The River’s edge is overhung with a thick riverine fringe, including ebony and fig trees. Further inland is a floodplain fringed with mopane forest and interspersed with winterthorn trees and huge acacias. The hills which form the backdrop to the Park are covered in broadleaf

Even though the Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 square kilometers, most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end which acts as a physical barrier to most of the Park’s animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river’s edge. ‘Island hopping’ buffalo and waterbuck are common. The Park also hosts good populations of lion and leopard, and listen too for the ubiquitous cry of the fish eagle.

Day 7 to Day 10 - Kiambi Lodge in Lower Zambezi National Park

Kiambi Lower Zambezi is your first gentle, mellow taste of the Lower Zambezi, and sets the uniquely African stage for your forthcoming journey of discovery.

On your arrival your safari guide from Wildlife Camp will be waiting for you and transfer you from Mfuwe Int airport to Wildlife Camp for your lifetime safari experience in the paradise of the South Luangwa National Park.

Brief notes about South Luangwa National Park

For most visitors, South Luangwa National Park is by far the most practical park to visit in the valley. This is Zambia’s premier wildlife park, with superb wildlife and many excellent camps. This is where the now famous walking safaris started from over 60 years ago and this unique African destination retains some of the finest world-class safari guides.

There are many contenders for the title of Africa's best game park. The Serengeti, Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Etosha, Kruger, Moremi and Mana Pools would certainly be high on the list. South Luangwa has a better claim than most. Some of these other areas will match its phenomenally high game densities. Many others – the lesser known of Africa's parks – will have equally few visitors. One or two also allow night drives, which open up a different, nocturnal world to view, allowing leopards to be commonly seen and even watched whilst hunting.

However, few have South Luangwa's high quality of guiding together with its remarkable wildlife spectacles, day and night, in the isolation of a true wilderness. These elements, perhaps, are how the contenders ought to be judged, and on these the South Luangwa Park comes out around the top of the list.

Day 10 to Day 13 - Wildlife Safari Camp, South Luangwa National Park

Wildlife Safari Camp is a safari-camp on the banks of the Luangwa River in Zambia. This camp provides guests with an affordable front-row seat to one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa, South Luangwa National Park. Since 1992 Wildlife Camp has been one of the most famous and popular camps in the Luangwa Valley, providing our guests with spectacular and authentic experiences in the African bush.

Wildlife Safari Camp has 9 en-suite chalets, five of which are situated in a quiet corner of the camp, overlooking a lagoon area and surrounded by huge shady trees while the other four are located in the centre of our camp, conveniently close to our reception area, main bar and restaurant. These four chalets each offer unique views over the Luangwa River. The Camp also has En-suite Safari Tents which are ideal for budget guests who cannot afford the slightly higher rates for the Chalets.

Zikomo Safari is owned and operated by an American family who work with experienced Zambian managers and staff. The Camp employs top professional guides, some of them with over fifteen (15) years experience in the Luangwa Valley. With immediate access to the Park, Zikomo Safari Camp guests can treat themselves to wonderful day and night game drives.
