Mukambi Safaris has three properties located throughout Kafue National Park, and these properties can be combined to make great safari itineraries that will give you a memorable safari of your lifetime. Each camp has its unique style and character and offers the ultimate in an African wildlife Safari experience. Friendly, yet luxurious, Mukambi Safaris can host you throughout your entire stay here in Kafue National Park.

Brief about Kafue National Park

Found in the center of western Zambia, Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest of Zambia’s national parks. It covers a massive 22,400 km2.

First established as a National Park in the 1950s by the legendary Norman Carr, Kafue is one of the largest national parks in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location only two hours drive from Livingstone, it remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched. Thanks to its size and variety of habitat types the Kafue holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife.

In recent years the Park has seen a well-managed growth in the number of Safari Camps and Lodges that operate in and around the Park. This new interest has brought with it more visitors and investment to the area, notably in infrastructure with several well-graded roads and airstrips.

As a consequence of the increasing interest and benefits in terms of investment this brings, the wildlife is beginning to enjoy an increased level of protection by the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), always aided and supported by the operators in and adjoining the park.

Day 1 – Transfer from Lusaka Airport to Mukambi Safari Lodge

Upon arrival at Lusaka International Airport, the driver from Uni Travel will welcome and help you with your luggage and then transfer you from Lusaka to Mukambi Safari Lodge in Kafue National Park which will be your home for your first two nights in Zambia.

Day 1 to Day 3 - Mukambi Safari Lodge in Kafue National Park

Commonly known as “The Gateway to The Kafue National Park”, Mukambi Safari Lodge is centrally located in the park, right on the banks of the stunning Kafue River. The Kafue National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa (roughly the size of Wales at more than 22,000km²), therefore we would recommend you book with us for at least a week so you have time to explore this vast park and combine time at Busanga, Fig Tree and Mukambi. However, shorter bookings of 3 to 4 nights at Mukambi will also guarantee a truly unique safari!

The lodge itself consists of a thatched building with several decks overlooking the Kafue River, and offers a new infinity pool, so on the hot days you can relax in the pool, looking over the vast Kafue River, peacefully reading one of the books from our small library collection. Upon return from your activities, relax with a drink in hand in one of our lounge areas, all of which offer stunning views of the river. Or chat with one of our guides while gazing up at the stars in the night sky by our warm campfire.

Don’t hesitate to visit our curio shop, which offers a selection of products made by the local village, or to ask for one of our massages on offer, which take place in the comfort of your room. Finally, don’t forget to look out for the many animals, that find sanctuary around the lodge area; impalas, baboons, monkeys, elephants, hippos, even a small pride of lions, and course our office wild cat, Simba!

Day 3 – Transfer from Mukambi Safari Lodge to Fig Tree Lodge

After having breakfast, you will depart Mukambi Safar Lodge very early in the morning heading to Fig Tree Camp, you will enjoy game viewing throughout your driving through the Kafue National Park. This transfer will take approximately 6 hours, the good news is that you will have a fully packed lunch from Mukambi Safari Lodge.

Day 3 to Day 5 - Fig Tree Camp in Kafue National Park

In June 2015 Mukambi Safaris opened a new luxury bush camp (called Fig Tree Bush Camp) in an undiscovered part of Kafue National Park

It is named after the giant fig tree next to the Boma (central area) overlooking a unique sandy lagoon. This lagoon maintains its alluring water throughout the season attracting an array of wildlife, including elephant, Puku, impala, warthog, zebra, and hartebeest. Predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas are regular visitors and the wild dogs have been known to prey on the concentration of game.

The camp has tented accommodation on 3-meter-high platforms above the ground, giving a spectacular view of the plains and the lagoon where various animals come to drink.

The beautiful location in combination with spectacular accommodation and the variety of wildlife are the main attractions – not to mention the remoteness of the Camp and as always the good food.

Fig Tree Bush Camp has tented accommodation on 3-meter platforms above the ground, giving a spectacular view over the lagoon and the plains towards the entrance of the camp. We have 4 en-suite luxury safari tents on stilts (2 twin and 2 double).

Guests will stay in one of our 4 furnished safari tents. Each tent overlooks the lagoon but also has a private view of the plains behind the camp offering unique opportunities to spot game. Each safari tent has an en-suite bathroom and veranda presenting a unique view from the tree canopy. Guests will then come together underneath the Fig Tree, from which the camp is named, to savor the serenity of the lagoon as well as delicious food and wine.

Day 5 – Road transfer from Fig Tree Bush Camp to Busanga Plains Camp

You will wake early in the morning on this then you will have your morning breakfast. After your breakfast, you will pack your bags and start heading to another amazing Camp within the Kafue National Park under the same umbrella of Mukambi Safari Lodge. This transfer will also take you about 6 hours of driving. Worry not as you will have a fully packed lunch. It is an interesting trip as you will have a great time with your safari guide who will take his time to explain anything you find of your interest on your way.

Day 5 to Day 8 - Busanga Plains Camp in Kafue National Park

The Plains Camp is the seasonal luxury bush camp of Mukambi Safaris located deep in the heart of the famous Busanga Plains in the north of beautiful Kafue National Park. The Busanga Plain is 720km2 of palm groves, papyrus-choked reed beds, and lily-covered lagoons representing one of the few wetland wildernesses in the world − a place where authentic African wildlife thrives, and the safari experience is second to none.

A wide variety of species is found on the plains including Lion, African Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lechwe, Side-striped Jackal, and Blue Wildebeest. In addition, large numbers of elephants and 500 bird species are recorded; watch for roan antelope and the rare oribi antelope.

The raised Boma (communal area), with an open campfire and dining area, is rustic, and informal and overlooks the openness of the plains, only interrupted by tree-studded islands where fig trees and wild date palms draw their nutrients from the remains of giant anthills. Relax and enjoy a refreshing dip in our pool or sunbathe on the wooden deck whilst overlooking the surrounding wetlands. A wooden viewing platform on stilts tucked away high up in the characteristic fig tree above the Boma offers a breathtaking view directly onto the floodplain.

Busanga is a landscape so distinctive, it is like no other you will see in Africa. This is the Africa you have dreamt of and you can visit this unique area with Mukambi Safaris. It offers a real “home away from home” experience, where service is professional and friendly, yet unobtrusive.

Our Busanga Plains Camp, in the middle of the flood plain, offers an intimate experience with accommodation consisting of four luxury safari tents (2 twin and 2 double) with en-suite open-air bathrooms and flushing toilets, each one overlooking the Busanga Plains. The tents are light, airy, and spacious with large beds draped with mosquito nets. Experience the total peace of nature from your private veranda. Enjoy the glow of lantern lights on canvas walls and drift off to sleep to the sounds of the African night.

Day 8 – Road transfer from Busanga Plains Camp to Mukambi Safari Lodge
