Best Of South Luangwa Photographic Safari Tour

This package features African Top destination and the prime wildlife area with an easy access with classic wildlife while staying at Zikomo Safaris Camp, Flatdogs Camp and Chindeni Bush camp in South Luangwa National Park a Home of Walking Safari.

Brief notes about South Luangwa National Park

For most visitors, South Luangwa National Park is by far the most practical park to visit in the valley. This is Zambia’s premier wildlife park, with superb wildlife and many excellent camps. This is where the now famous walking safaris started from over 60 years ago and this unique African destination retains some of the finest world-class safari guides.

There are many contenders for the title of Africa's best game park. The Serengeti, Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Etosha, Kruger, Moremi and Mana Pools would certainly be high on the list. South Luangwa has a better claim than most. Some of these other areas will match its phenomenally high game densities. Many others – the lesser known of Africa's parks – will have equally few visitors. One or two also allow night drives, which open up a different, nocturnal world to view, allowing leopards to be commonly seen and even watched whilst hunting.

However, few have South Luangwa's high quality of guiding together with its remarkable wildlife spectacles, day and night, in the isolation of a true wilderness. These elements, perhaps, are how the contenders ought to be judged, and on these the South Luangwa Park comes out around the top of the list.

It is in the Nsefu sector. This sector is one of the least crowded and richest in wildlife areas in the world.

Located in the Mfuwe area, just outside the gates into South Luangwa National Park, Flatdogs Camp focuses on value, its standards have improved considerably over recent years; it is now a comfortable safari camp that should appeal to many different types of traveler.

Flatdogs is a bigger property (taking up to 44 guests) than most of the camps in the South Luangwa area, and guests are not ‘hosted’ here – so visitors take their meals independently.

Set around a central courtyard, the main areas at Flatdogs Camp sport simple wooden furniture polished stone floors and muted safari tones. The open-sided restaurant is open throughout the day, with tables under cover or outside beneath shady umbrellas. Both those on a full-board rate and those staying independently select from a varied à la carte menu.

A separate open-side area incorporates the well-stocked bar, which has both high wooden bar stools and a number of comfy sofas.

The large and crystal-clear swimming pool is surrounded by sun loungers and there are various shady spots to sit and read, or take in the sounds of the bush. The pool isn’t fenced so if you’re going for a dip, be sure to check first for any hippos or crocodiles! Flatdogs Camp also has a small shop stocked with curios, books, the odd piece of clothing and essentials such as sun cream and toothpaste. You’ll find a few computers with internet access here, too, and there is Wi-Fi in the courtyard area, both available at extra cost.

Activities from Flatdogs Camp include day and night safari drives in open-topped Toyota Landcruisers, which seat a maximum of six people in three rows. They also offer walking safaris accompanied by a guide and armed scout, usually during the drier months between about June and October.

Just like in other safari camps, the morning activity starts at about 6.00am, when the park opens, returning to camp at around 10.00am. Then the afternoon activity leaves after tea at about 4.00pm and returns to the camp around 08.00pm. There's something about sleeping under canvas that ignites a sense of adventure in everyone. At Chindeni you can combine that thrill with style and comfort in one of its four opulent tents.
